Alex Agureev
Alex joined Northzone in 2023 as part of the Growth Fund. He focuses on growth-stage companies across the U.S. and Europe, working with founders building category-defining companies in fintech, cybersecurity, AI applications, and consumer platforms. His portfolio includes Finom, Xbow, OpenFX, Nivoda, and CarOnSale.
Prior to Northzone, Alex began his career as a software developer before advising private equity investors in London and San Francisco on software and technology acquisitions. He holds degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Oxford and Princeton.
How did you get here?
I studied computer engineering just before GPUs became the hottest real estate in tech and started my career as a software developer. While at Princeton, everyone in my engineering class seemed to be starting a company, and I caught the same bug. I co-founded a web3 startup, raising a pre-seed in a week, very much the spirit of 2020, even if we never found PMF. I later joined BCG advising investors on software buyouts and crunching through metrics before deciding I wanted to work closer to builders.
What are you on the lookout for?
I do not constrain my interests by sector, but I consistently over-index on two things: exceptional founders and deep customer love. The best founders turn complex ideas into clear visions that customers, employees, and investors rally behind. I also spend (too much!) time speaking with users, using products, and reading forums; the companies that stand out are the ones customers cannot get enough of.
